February Strike commemoration

The February Strikes were commemorated by hundreds of people last weekend. During the strike 76 years ago, the people of Amsterdam protested against the persecution of Jews. This is the only time that the population openly protested against the German occupation. For this man it was a natural thing to join the strike.

Bridge named after founder
A bridge in the Red Light District was named after Bet van Beeren last week. In doing so, Amsterdam is honouring one of the most prominent figures of that illustrious neighborhood. Van Beeren was one of the first Gay Rights advocates. But her café ‘t Mandje was a safe haven for all the other people of Amsterdam.

No contact point for illegal letting

Plans for a contact point for illegal letting have been cancelled. The law was intended to help Amsterdam counteract illegal letting. But the government doesn’t agree with the law. According to the ministers Amsterdam has enough problems as it is. They’re calling the deal the city made with Airbnb earlier ‘a good thing’.
